But would anyone really care about this band if it wasn’t for the covers? As far as this sort of post-hardcore goes, they’ve typically been above average, but even by those standards, that doesn’t amount to a whole lot, and given that this album has dropped relatively without warning can make it easy to presume that original material is more of a formality these days than anything else.Īnd after listening to Let Light Overcome, the most pertinent question is less concerned with how good it is and more how necessary.
OUR LAST NIGHT OVERCOME THE DARKNESS ALBUM SERIES
Because let’s face it, none of their covers have been all that impactful on a large scale, not when the Punk Goes series has pretty much commodified scene gimmickry in that vein and Our Last Night are only deepening the sinkhole with each contribution. At one point during the night I even considered crowd surfing.Oh yeah, Our Last Night do record their own material, don’t they? It’s just that it’s been so long since they’ve released anything that hasn’t been a cover that it’s become easy to wonder whether this band is really all that worthwhile. It was an awesome way to spend a Friday night and burn some energy. There was a lot of crowd surfing and mosh pits. Overall the show was super stimulating and the atmosphere was contagious. Their latest album was released on November 8th. They also threw in “Broken Lives” and “Tongue Tied” from their 2017 release Selective Hearing. The group played songs from their earlier works like “Same Old War” and “Sunrise”, which are both off their album Oak Island. The music is metal mixed with electronic, which makes their music quite unique.įinally, Our Last Night took to the stage. They played “Murder Mitten” and “Ten Thousand Feet” off their album New Demons. They played songs mostly from their 2016 release Treehouse. During the song their frontman, Telle, jumped down onto the barricade and was in front of everybody. They also played “Burning Your World Down,” which was recently released on November 1st. On the set list they had one of their fan favorites “Red Clouds”, off their latest album Violent Noise. They were crazy energetic, and it is when the action really began. The Word Alive was up next and they were really exciting to listen to. As of right now, they are focusing on releasing their album, Over the Moon. After their set, I got an opportunity to talk with their guitarist, Aaron, about their plans for 2020. Kicking off the night were Illinois locals, Ashland, who are currently in the works of releasing their upcoming album December 13th on Rise Records. Playing alongside them were I See Stars, The Word Alive, and Ashland. The tour was in celebration of their 6th studio album Overcome the Darkness.

The tour kicked off in Houston on November 5, 2019, and will conclude in Orlando on December 8th. On Friday November 22nd the post hardcore band from New Hampshire, Our Last Night, brought their “Let Light Overcome the Darkness” tour to Chicago’s House of Blues.
